Information on how best to store and post your beloved pet as well as time scales and important information. POSTING & TIMESCALES Information on how to best store and post your beloved pet. As well as average timescales and how it works 01 How do I get them to you? Please freeze any specimens as soon after death as possible to ensure they can be worked with. You can freeze ready for posting (following instructions below), meaning you can take the tub out, place in a box and post the day you are shipping without thawing out. - Package into something sturdy such as a plastic tub. - Place tissue under, around and over to make sure they cannot move around and get damaged in the post, however don’t pack too tightly or push down hard as you risk squashing them. Just enough so can’t get thrown around in transit. - Place tub into a box or any kind of additional packaging and pad. - Add a note inside with your name. <-- Very Important **Please make sure you remove any excess soil or dirt before shipping as this can cause damage** Please post first class OR Special by 1pm and I recommend signed for peace of mind. Do not post on Friday or Saturday. Please only post Monday - Thursday. 02 How long does it take? Please see below average timescales, this is a guide only to provide a rough estimate. Many things can affect how long this takes including age and size, especially for tarantulas. The process must be done a certain way to mitigate issues. Jumping Spiders: 2 - 6 weeks Small/Young Tarantulas: 3 - 8 weeks Adult Tarantulas: 1 - 3 Months Mantids: 2 - 6 weeks Other Insects: 2 - 6 weeks Pre Dried (Anything): 1 week We will let you know once they are ready and provide updates as and when. We check commissions regularly. Please avoid chasing us as this increases the workload and in turn slows us down. Once dry we will aim to get your display finished within 1-4 weeks depending on workload. 03 How does it work? Please see basic process below; Insects and Tarantulas only Step 1: Fill out commission request form Step 2: You'll be added to wait list Step 3: You'll be contacted when its time to send and provided instructions Step 4: On arrival we will start work preserving your pet, emptying and filling abdomen where appropriate and send photos to confirm happy with positioning etc. You will pay the 50% deposit at this stage. Step 5: We will regularly check and contact you when dry and moving to next stage Step 6: We will frame your pet, adding labels etc and then send a finished photo. This is when you will pay the balance with postage. Step 7: Your pet is posted back to you Wet Specimens only Step 1: Contact us with your requirements, detailing size and species Step 2: You'll be given an estimate and advised how to post Step 3: On arrival we will start work preserving your pet. This is done via museum grade preserving methods and we use formaldehyde. Step 4: We will regularly check and contact you when preservation is complete and they are moving to washing stage. Step 5: We will wash and fill with 70% isopropyl alcohol. We will send photos. This is when you will be asked to pay with postage cost. Step 6: They will stay in the 70% isopropyl alcohol for a few days and then it will be emptied before shipping. You will be advised how much alcohol you require to fill on arrival. Step 7: Your pet is posted back to you 04 Important info for Insects/Mantids/Spiders Similar to tarantulas, insects ideally need to be posted within a few days of passing or frozen until you are able to. They must be posted to us via a 24 hour service (recommended you do signed for). Once in the freezer, the insect/mantid can stay until ready to be worked on. We can still work with them if they have started to or completely dried out, they will just need relaxing first (which we will do). Depeding on this, the abomden may not be able to be filled. If you are unsure, please message us. For ease, package them in a tub before freezing so can just take out of the day and no need to thaw first. 05 Important info for Wet Specimens In order to be able to preserve your pet they need to be frozen as soon as possible after death (within 24 hours ideally) and posted to us via a 24 hour service (recommended you do signed for). Once in the freezer, they can stay until ready to be worked on. If you are unsure, send us a message and we will be happy to help. As long as they aren't freezer burned or shrived, they should be ok. For ease, package them in a tub before freezing so can just take out of the day and no need to thaw first. Please see "how to get them to us" section for a guide. 06 Important info for Moults These can be posted to us in any time frame as we will need to relax them regardless. Preserve your cherished pet through our expert wet specimen preservation methods, ensuring a lasting and authentic memory. WET SPECIMENS We can preserve your pet using museum standard methods, ensuring you have a lasting memory of your pet. VIEW OUR Examples Wet specimens is a method of taxidermy where animal (or parts of) is preserved by 'fixing' the animal into a suspended state. This means the decomposition process is stopped and the animal stays as they were at the time of death. We use a museum standard method meaning your pet will be preserved using formaldehyde. This is the only true way to preserve and ensures your pet will stay in a fixed state for time to come. After this process they will stay in 70% isopropyl alcohol. CARE SHEETS OUR Care Sheets Wet Specimens All my wet specimens are professionally fixed with Formlin before being transferred to alcohol. Specimens can be filled with 70% Isopropyl (Rubbing Alcohol) or 70% Ethanol (Surgical Spirit). This can be purchased online from websites such as eBay or Amazon but I also recommend APC Pure and Hexeal. When buying Isopropyl online, do check beforehand if the liquid is clear. These chemicals are also used for cleaning which means some sellers add coloured dye. Keep all specimens away from naked flames and out of direct sunlight. Overtime the liquid may discolour and go yellow, this happens more with mammals than reptiles and is usually most likely to happen in the specimens first year. Its perfectly normal and can be left or you can change the liquid out for fresh. Specimens may also require to be topped up over time. If you are topping up the alcohol, please make sure you use the same alcohol and do not mix Ethanol and Isopropyl. If you want to change from Ethanol to Isopropyl and vice versa, empty completely, wash with distilled water and refill. Distilled water can be bought online and is usually £1-2 per litre. If you have bought a globe from us and noticed it has leaked, please check you haven’t put it somewhere where the temperatures change rapidly such as above a radiator as this will cause the rubber bung and the liquid to expand. To stop it leaking, take the bung out, top up if required, dry the bung off and reinsert. Taxidermy It's generally recommended that once every 6 months you should spray your taxidermy items with protector spray as this helps protect against pest damage like mites and moths. All items are treated when been mounted, however its good practice to retreat. Protector sprays can be purchase online. Please read and follow the instructions provided by the product manufacturer. Avoid displaying in direct sunlight, this can cause damage and sun bleaching to the fur/feathers. Frames/Displays Keep in a dry non humid areas. Rooms such a bathrooms are never recommended. Please avoid hanging frames above radiators or plants that need lots of moisture. Glass cleaner can be used to clean frames and domes. Keep out of direct sunlight - this can cause the colours of the insects within the piece to become damaged and sun bleached. Domes are not sealed at the base so be careful when moving any pieces If moving home, avoid leaving any taxidermy boxed up for long periods of time and try not to store in outbuildings or attics. This is due to the risk of moisture build up and insects. Resin If your item comes into regular contact with smoke it can yellow. However, some of our smoking resin jewellery clients have worn their pieces for years without discolouration. Avoid exposing your jewellery to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. This includes perfume, hair spray, cleaning solutions, nail polish remover, antibacterial hand sanitiser etc. Harsh solvents can react with the epoxy and cause it to become scaly, yellow, chip or break down completely. If you need to clean your jewellery use warm water, washing up liquid and a soft cloth but avoid leaving submerged in water for long periods of time. We recommend you remove resin jewellery when showering, swimming and putting perfume on. We use high quality UV resistant resin, therefore it shouldn’t yellow when left exposed to the sun but we still recommend you avoid leaving your pieces on windowsills etc. care sheets Ethically sourced, cruelty free taxidermy and entomology
